Brucher Thieltgen & Partners: Litigation in an Era of Heightened Expectations
Founded twenty years ago by three lawyers from a US law firm, Brucher Thieltgen & Partners has established itself as a leading business law firm in Luxembourg.
In late 2005, Jean Brucher, Marie Bena and Nicolas Thieltgen left the Luxembourg office of a major US law firm with a simple idea: the practice of law deserves more than a narrow business plan. The three launched their own firm, convinced that diversity of expertise was a strength rather than a weakness. Twenty years later, Brucher Thieltgen & Partners has around 60 professionals, including 38 lawyers, and opens between 400 and 500 new matters each year.
Growth was initially gradual before accelerating significantly from 2018 onwards. It was driven from within: the firm’s first associates went on to become partners. Today, the firm has five partners and proudly promotes a culture of internal career development.
Versatility at the Heart of Our DNA
What sets the firm apart is, above all, its approach: examining every matter from a 360-degree perspective. Among the five partners, Marie Bena specialises in general litigation, employment and social law. Nicolas Thieltgen focuses on commercial litigation, arbitration and banking and financial regulatory advice. Philippe Sylvestre concentrates on commercial disputes, shareholder conflicts and restructuring.
Different profiles within the firm, but a shared philosophy. “Clients do not come to us with an area of law; they come to us with a problem,” explains Nicolas Thieltgen. Often a multifaceted problem requiring a multidisciplinary response. This ability to combine expertise across different areas of law, including banking, employment, tax, sports law and intellectual property, remains one of the firm’s defining characteristics. It is a legacy of a time when Luxembourg lawyers had, by necessity, to master a broad range of legal disciplines.

Luxembourg: A Hub for International Law
As the world’s second-largest investment fund centre after the United States, Luxembourg attracts an international clientele that now accounts for 50% to 55% of the firm’s revenue. Investors from around the world structure their transactions in Luxembourg and need advisers who can understand their challenges while navigating the local legal environment.
This is precisely the bridging role played by Brucher Thieltgen & Partners. All the firm’s partners have international education or experience, while remaining firmly rooted in Luxembourg’s legal and business ecosystem. A rare and highly sought-after combination.

The Challenges Ahead
Looking ahead to the next two to five years, the firm’s direction is clear: organic growth, strengthening existing practice areas and investing in new fields, including business criminal law, international arbitration and restructuring. Recruiting talented lawyers trained in France and Belgium is part of this strategy of carefully managed expansion.
Recognised as a Best Workplace for three consecutive years, the firm considers employee well-being a key differentiator compared with larger organisations.
Combining a human-sized structure with an international outlook and remaining true to its original commitment to intellectual excellence, Brucher Thieltgen & Partners enters its third decade with the same convictions as its founders, but with considerably greater resources to put them into practice.
